You know, generally The Limelight is supposed to be uplifting and positive, but ever once in a while I get so angry that I just need to rant. For instance when that nutcase pastor, Blair Donnolly, was found not guilty of murder after stabbing his daughter multiple times, because “god told him to do it”.

Well once again we have a similar case on our hands, and once again, the psychopathic nutcase is gonna get off. I am talking of course about Vince Li, the insane lunantic who stabbed an innocent young man on a greyhound bus about fifty times, and then decapitated him, mutilated his body and ate his eyeballs. His trial ends tomorrow, and get this: Both the prosecution and the defence agree he should be found not guilty by reason of insanity.

You have got to be fucking kidding me. Oh, there’s no doubt this guy is fucking off his rocker, but in my oh so humble opinion I don’t care if you’re the biggest nut job to ever live, if you carve up an innocent passenger on a greyhound bus in a totally random attack, you should be locked up forever. That means you NEVER get out. EVER. This is for the good of society, and the good of society should always come first over the needs of a murderer, even if “God” did tell him to do it.

As it stands, by finding him not criminally responsible, the door has been left open for some moron psychiatrist with more education than common sense to pronounce this nut job sane in a couple of years and let him back out into society. Then he can stop taking his medication and carve someone else up. In the meantime he might be moving into a care home right next door to you.

I’ll tell you what we should do, we should deport this man back to China and let the Chinese deal with him. In this instance they might act with more sense than our stupidly liberal justice system will.

Let’s face it, mental illness should not be an excuse to get away with murder. Mentally ill or not, this man is as much a danger to society as any other murderous bastard. The idea that his mental illness prevented him from knowing it was wrong is obscene. We have fucking Pitt-bull dogs put to death  when they attack someone, even if they DON’T kill them, and I am sorry, but unlike a human being, they actually don’t know that mutilating people is bad.

what has the world come too??? i mean, if how many people seen him hold the guys head up and shit, there shouldn’t be a trial. they should have pulled him out of the bus, stood him in front of it…and shot him in the face.

While I share peoples horror at what this man did, I will reserve judgment on the prediction that he’s “going to walk free”.

My guess is that he WILL be locked up for the remainder of his natural life, but in a psychiatric ward, not a prison. The end result is the same (he’s off the street), and in fact… I’d wager a few dollars that the likelihood of him getting out “early” from a psych ward is actually less than the likelihood of him getting out “early” from prison.

And as a side note, the comparisons to euthanizing dogs is an argument that often comes up in cases like this, and I cringe every time I read it. It’s a horrible analogy IMO… because of the very fact that one is an animal, the other is a human.

And yes, I recognize that we human beans are just another animal… but still, we have, and should have, different “rules” for animals and people).

Argue for capital punishment, fine… I don’t agree with it, but c’est la vie… but the analogy of aggressive dogs isn’t the way to make the argument.

    Mothman, you missed my point.

My comment about pitt-bulls was not an argument for capital punishment, it was meant to demonstrate this:

We as a society think that putting dogs to death when they hurt or kill a person is acceptable, in other words, we hold them responsible and make them pay, even though a dog does not know that killing people is wrong.

And yet we allow this man to murder, mutilate and consume the eyeballs of an innocent stranger on a bus, and then consider him not criminally responsible, allowing him to live out his life without so much as a criminal record for his actions. Remember, he was given opporunities for treatment before he beheaded someone, and refused it over and over. We accpet the words of a couple of doctors that he didn’t know it was wrong, didn’t know any better. Well if a human being can get away with murdering and mutiliating somone as long as a doctor is willing to say they didn’t know any better, then clearly we need to stop holding dogs responsible when they hurt people as well, because they also don’t know any better.

It’s a travesty. He has gotten off scott free, putting him in a psychiatric facilty is not punishment, it’s a gift. I agree he should not be in prison, he should be in a psych ward forever, but WITH a criminal record, because as politically incorrect as it may be, not everyone mentally ill person is simply depressed or bi-polar, some actually are, as Vince Li has so aptly demonstrated, CRIMINALLY INSANE. He’s a god damn real life Norman Bates for God’s sake.

  • Mothman says:

I agree that he really should have a criminal record, if for no other reason than to ‘warn” authority in the future IF he ever walks free.

But, from my perspective, whether or not he has a criminal is pretty immaterial to what is important to me.

For me, the point of prison, or in this case, a psych ward, is to punish, rehabilitate if possible, and to keep the person away from “us”.

If a person is held in a way that accomplishes all, or some of those, but they don’t have a criminal record, I’m really OK with that. Whether or not a person has a criminal record doesn’t stop them from hurting me or others if they have the notion, and ability, to do so.

And a person NOT having a criminal record doesn’t make them any more likely to hurt me or others if they are locked away.

Further to that… whether a judge says to this person “You’re a bad man” or says to him “You’re a sick man” doesn’t change the facts of the case, and doesn’t change the results, IF he is locked away. I think it’s just a case of semantics, and isn’t something I’d lose sleep over.

I also don’t see being required to whither away on a psych ward as a “gift”. I wouldn’t want to be there OR prison.

And as far as the pitbull analogy, I still don’t really like that analogy. I don’t believe aggressive dogs are put down because they are being “held responsible” and are being made to pay for their behaviour. Rather, they are put down simply to prevent them from being a threat in the future.

We believe that is acceptable, because they are animals. We (the general “we”, at least here in Canada and in other parts of the world) don’t apply the same logic when it comes to humans.

  • Jonathan says:

What makes the fact that he does not have a crimial record scary, is that if at such time he is released, he will never be labelled as a dangerous offender, and therefore, you and I will never have the right to know where he is.

  • John Doe says:

The reason that our government would let this man walk free is a complete mystery for me. For years people have committed crimes and when is court, told the jury that “God” told them to, and they have been laughed at and locked up in prison. Now, when the worst of them all comes to court and uses the same excuse, he is believed. What the hell!?!?! Yea he’ll be in a ward for like 10 years maybe less until he’s let out by some retarded doctor. For years the rate of people escaping and being let out a psych ward has been going up and up. But thats not what I am worried about. What i’m worried about is that people know now that the jury isn’t as “uptight” as it used to be. All you need is one extremely smart killer to randomly kill someone in public and throw in some stuff to prove you’re insane, then say that “the voices” or “God” told you to do it, be sent to a ward and create a mass breakout in a matter of years. Then we all have thousands of psycho people running around rioting. Sure the police will catch about half but what about the rest, the half that are full of killers and people who want revenge for what our government did to them. We are all in danger for a mistake that was created by 10 jury members and a judge. This will affect many lives forever.
