Dear Google: Please Just Give Me a List of What We’re Still Allowed to Say

Once upon a time about 10 years ago (yes, really), I wrote a review on this blog of Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now. Spoiler alert: I didn’t like it.

A short time ago, I had the undeserved pleasure of spending all day scouring through that page trying to figure out what Google considered “dangerous and derogatory” content.

Seriously. A review of a new-age self-help book considered dangerous content by Google.

I looked over the page with a fine tooth comb, wasting hours of my time trying to determine what was wrong. You see, Google’s stupid algorithm doesn’t tell you what the actual problem is. You’re just left to guess. I deleted a few comments with questionable language and submitted the page for review.

Nope. Google still considered it evil and dangerous.

So what is the problem? I’ll never know. But based on information I found online, if you don’t figure out what Google doesn’t like and “fix” it, they are not unlikely to disable your entire account. And steal any money they owe you in the process.

Dealing with Google (and all tech companies’) increasingly Orwellian censorship isn’t worth it. I just took AdSense Ads off the entire website. I’ll find another, less ugly way to monetize this site.
